The Brother AIR1800 has the lowest maker's list price here, $899.99 from Brother: a button sends each looper thread through a tube with a gust of air. The Juki MO-1000 adds an automatic needle threader, 1,500 stitches per minute and a 9 mm overlock width, at a JUKI suggested retail price of $2,299. Brother's Airflow 3000 and Baby Lock's Celebrate sit in between and are sold mainly through dealers.
Threading the loopers is the slowest part of changing colors on a serger. If you sew small batches in many colors, air threading turns that job into feeding the thread into a port and pressing a button or lever. Every figure below is from the maker's own page.

Best value
Brother AIR1800 Air Serger
Air threading for the loopers, 2/3/4 thread stitches and LED lighting, at Brother's list price of $899.99.
- Threads
- 2, 3 or 4
- Max speed
- 1,300 spm
- Air system
- Button, air through tubes
- Needle threader
- Not in Brother's spec list
Pros
- Each looper has a threading port joined to it by a tube; a button sends the thread through with air, per Brother
- Flatlock, overlock and rolled hem with two, three or four threads and one or two needles
- Knife on/off switch, quick-change rolled hem levers and a cover-open warning light, per Brother
- Sold by Amazon itself, with a 1/5/25 year limited Brother warranty
Cons
- Brother's spec list gives no stitch width or needle threader
- For US use at 120 volts only; other use voids the warranty, per the Amazon listing
Brother's AIR1800 has a threading port for each looper, connected to the end of the looper by a tube. You put the thread into the port and press a button, and a gust of air carries it through. It sews flatlock, overlock and rolled hem stitches with two, three or four threads and one or two needles, at up to 1,300 stitches per minute, with differential feed and an LED-lit work area Brother describes as easy on the eyes on dark fabrics.
Brother's page also lists a switch that turns the cutting knife off, quick-change levers for the rolled hem and an error light that comes on when the fabric cover is open. It is the one air threading serger here that Amazon itself sells.
Best for extra feet
Brother Airflow 3000 Air Serger
Brother's dealer-sold air serger, with gathering, blindstitch and adjustable zipper/piping feet in the box.
- Threads
- 2, 3 or 4
- Max speed
- 1,300 spm
- Air system
- One-touch air looper threading
- Needle threader
- Not in Brother's spec list
Pros
- Gathering, blindstitch and adjustable zipper/piping feet plus a trim trap included, per Brother
- Overlock seam width of 5 to 7.5 mm and differential feed from 0.7 to 2.0
- Adjustable presser foot pressure
- 1/5/25 year limited serger warranty, per Brother
Cons
- Brother's page gives no price and points to dealers
- On Amazon it comes from a dealer, often in short supply
The Airflow 3000 uses the same idea as the AIR1800: one touch sends air through the loopers to thread them. Brother lists 2/3/4 thread stitches including flatlock, overlock and rolled hem, a 1,300 stitches per minute top speed, differential feed from 0.7 to 2.0, an overlock seam width of 5 to 7.5 mm, LED lighting and adjustable presser foot pressure.
The difference you can see on Brother's two pages is what comes in the box and where it is sold. The Airflow 3000 includes a gathering foot, a blindstitch foot and an adjustable zipper/piping foot, and Brother sends buyers to a dealer rather than listing a price. If you would use piping and gathering on cushions, bags or garments, the included feet are the reason to pick it over the AIR1800.
Best lever system
Baby Lock Celebrate Serger
Baby Lock's Jet-Air threading sends thread through tubular loopers at the touch of a lever, with a built-in needle threader.
- Threads
- 2, 3 or 4
- Max speed
- Not on Baby Lock's page
- Air system
- Jet-Air, lever
- Needle threader

Pros
- "With just the touch of a lever, thread is sent through the tubular loopers," per Baby Lock
- Built-in needle threader
- 7.5 mm stitch width and 4 mm stitch length, with differential feed
- Sold through independent sewing machine retailers
Cons
- Not sold on Amazon (this link earns us nothing)
- Baby Lock lists a regular price of $1,352
- Baby Lock's page does not give a top speed
Baby Lock has two air threading systems. Its Jet-Air threading, on the Celebrate and Victory, sends thread through tubular loopers "with just the touch of a lever", and Baby Lock adds that there are no looper thread guides to struggle with. Its ExtraordinAir threading, on models such as the Acclaim, Triumph and Splendor, passes the looper threads through both loopers with a burst of air.
The Celebrate is the entry to that range: 2, 3 or 4 thread serging, a built-in needle threader, a 7.5 mm stitch width, a 4 mm stitch length and differential feed, in a 16 lb machine. Baby Lock lists it at a regular price of $1,352 and sells it through independent retailers, so the price you pay and the lessons that come with it depend on the shop.
Best premium
Juki MO-1000 Air Threading Serger
Looper air threading, an automatic needle threader, 1,500 stitches per minute and a 9 mm overlock width.
- Threads
- 2, 3 or 4
- Max speed
- 1,500 spm
- Air system
- Push button, looper air threading
- Needle threader
- Automatic
Pros
- Insert 1/2 to 1 inch of thread into each hole and press the air button, per Juki
- Automatic needle threader and automatic rolled hemming
- Fastest and widest here: 1,500 stitches per minute and a 9 mm maximum overlock width
- Differential feed can be changed while sewing, per Juki
Cons
- JUKI suggested retail price of $2,299
- On Amazon it comes from third-party sellers, often in short supply
Juki's MO-1000 threads both loopers by air: you insert half an inch to an inch of thread into each hole and press the air control button. It also has an automatic needle threader (lower the lever, hook the thread, release), so it is the one machine here where Juki lists help for both the loopers and the needles. It sews 2, 3 or 4 thread stitches at up to 1,500 stitches per minute, with a 4 mm maximum stitch length and a 9 mm maximum overlock width.
Juki lists differential feed from 0.7 to 2.0 mm that can be adjusted while sewing, an upper knife that can be turned off, a cool-running LED light, low noise and vibration, and a safety lock that stops sewing when the presser foot is up or the cover is open. At 20 lb it is a machine for a shop that serges daily.
How air threading works
On a standard serger you thread each looper by hand through a series of guides, the fiddliest part of changing thread colors. On an air threading serger, each looper's thread path is a tube. You feed the thread into a port, then a puff of air carries it all the way through the looper. The makers each do it a little differently:
- Brother (AIR1800, Airflow 3000): a threading port for each looper, connected by a tube, and a button that sends a gust of air through.
- Juki (MO-1000): insert 1/2 to 1 inch of thread into each hole and press the air control button.
- Baby Lock Jet-Air (Celebrate, Victory): a lever sends the thread through the tubular loopers.
- Baby Lock ExtraordinAir (Acclaim, Triumph, Splendor and others): a burst of air passes the thread through both loopers.
What air threading does not do
Air threading covers the loopers. The needles are threaded separately, and only some machines help with that: Juki lists an automatic needle threader on the MO-1000 and Baby Lock a built-in needle threader on the Celebrate, while neither Brother page lists one in its specs. You still set tensions, stitch length and differential feed for each fabric, as on any serger.
Is air threading worth it?
It depends on how often you change threads. A manual serger like the Brother 1034D has a Brother list price of $319.99, against $899.99 for the AIR1800. On a manual machine you can change colors by tying the new threads on to the old ones and pulling them through; Bernina's serger tips describe that method, which works when the old threads are still in place. Air threading earns its price when you rethread from scratch often: after a thread breaks or runs out mid-seam, or when every order is a different color.
For a shop sewing long runs of one color, the money is better spent elsewhere, for example on a coverstitch machine for hems. Our best serger guide covers manual machines as well.

Buying tips
- Check who is selling. Brother's AIR1800 is sold by Amazon itself. The Juki and the Airflow 3000 on Amazon come from third-party sellers and dealers, so check the seller and whether the maker's warranty applies.
- Ask a dealer about lessons. Juki and Baby Lock sell through dealers, and Brother points Airflow 3000 buyers to one. Setup help is worth asking about on a machine this expensive.
- Think about hems too. No serger here sews a coverstitch hem. Baby Lock's Triumph and Splendor combine overlock and coverstitch in one machine, at a higher price; otherwise a separate coverstitch machine does the hems.
Frequently asked questions
What is an air threading serger?
A serger whose loopers are threaded through tubes by a puff of air. You feed the thread into a port and press a button or lever, instead of threading each looper by hand through a series of guides.
Does air threading thread the needles too?
No. Air threading covers the loopers. Some machines add help for the needles: Juki lists an automatic needle threader on the MO-1000 and Baby Lock a built-in needle threader on the Celebrate.
What is the cheapest air threading serger?
Of the machines here, the Brother AIR1800, at a Brother list price of $899.99. Brother's Airflow 3000 is sold through dealers without a listed price, and Juki's MO-1000 has a suggested retail price of $2,299.
What is the difference between Jet-Air and ExtraordinAir?
Both are Baby Lock air threading systems. Jet-Air, on the Celebrate and Victory, sends thread through tubular loopers at the touch of a lever. ExtraordinAir, on models such as the Acclaim, Triumph and Splendor, passes the threads through both loopers with a burst of air.
Is an air threading serger good for beginners?
It removes the step beginners find hardest, threading the loopers. The other settings (tension, stitch length, differential feed) still need learning, and a manual serger like the Brother 1034D costs much less if budget matters more.
