The Handi Quilter Moxie ST is the sit-down longarm most quilters should look at first: an 18-inch throat, built-in stitch regulation, 2,100 stitches per minute and a 38 by 38 inch table, at a Handi Quilter list price of $6,495. Step up to the Amara ST for a 20-inch throat and a table that raises and lowers at the touch of a button, or to Grace's 19SD for a 19-inch throat at up to 2,600 stitches per minute.
A sit-down longarm stays still while you move the quilt under the needle, the way you free-motion on a home machine, but with far more room. It needs a table and a chair rather than a 12-foot frame. Every figure below is from the maker's own page, checked on November 7, 2026.

- 30-day money-back guarantee from Grace
Cons
- Grace list value of $7,999.95
- Not sold on Amazon (this link earns us nothing); Grace's page gives no table size
Grace describes the 19SD as a sit-down quilting system with a 19-inch throat, a high-torque motor and optical-encoder stitch regulation: two encoders measure each stitch and adjust it in real time, so stitch length stays even whether you move slowly through a dense corner or quickly across open space. It runs at up to 2,600 stitches per minute.
It comes on an ergonomic sit-down table with included leaves. Grace lists it at a value of $7,999.95 and sells it direct and through dealers, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Best budget
Grace Little Rebel
A 13-inch-throat machine with stitch regulation that also pieces like a sewing machine, at a Grace list value of $3,499.95.
- Throat
- 13 in (8.5 in high)
- Max speed
- 1,600 spm
- Stitch regulation
- Built in (optical encoder)
- Table

Pros
- Switches from piecing to free-motion quilting in under a minute, per Grace
- Built-in stitch regulation and an M-class bobbin
- Can also go on a Grace frame later
- Sold on Amazon by The Grace Company
Cons
- 13-inch throat, the smallest here
- The extension base is smaller than a 38-inch sit-down table
The Little Rebel is a sewing and quilting machine in one. Grace says you can piece with the sewing foot and feed dogs, then slide on the quilting plate and change the foot to free-motion quilt in less than a minute. It has a 13-inch throat with 8.5 inches of height, built-in optical-encoder stitch regulation, an M-class bobbin and speeds up to 1,600 stitches per minute.
To quilt sitting down, you use the included quilting extension base; later, the same machine can go on a Grace frame. It comes with 1/4 inch, scant 1/4 inch, zipper and hopping feet. For a maker testing whether quilting for customers pays, it is the cheapest stitch-regulated machine here.
Best mid-arm without stitch regulation
Juki TL-2010Q
A fast straight-stitch mid-arm with drop feed for free-motion quilting, a knee lifter and an automatic thread trimmer.
- Throat
- Not on Juki's page
- Max speed
- 1,500 spm
- Stitch regulation
- None (speed control 200 to 1,500)
- Table
- 23 by 13 in auxiliary table
Pros
- Drop feed for free-motion quilting, and straight-stitch piecing at up to 1,500 stitches per minute
- Knee lifter raises the foot up to 12 mm
- Automatic thread trimmer and needle threader
- Doubles as a piecing machine for the quilt top
Cons
- No stitch regulation: stitch length depends on your hand speed
- JUKI suggested retail price of $2,169; on Amazon from third-party sellers
Juki calls the TL-2010Q a mid-arm quilting and piecing machine. It sews straight stitch only at up to 1,500 stitches per minute, with speed control from 200, and has drop feed for free-motion quilting, a knee lifter that raises the foot up to 12 mm, an automatic thread trimmer and a 23 by 13 inch auxiliary table.
It has no stitch regulation, so free-motion stitch length depends on matching your hand speed to the machine. In return, it is also a fast piecing machine, and its suggested retail price is $2,169. Our heavy-duty sewing machine guide covers it for bags and canvas.
Sit-down or frame?
On a frame longarm, the quilt is held flat on rails and you move the machine over it, which suits edge-to-edge designs and pantographs on large quilts. On a sit-down longarm, the machine stays put and you move the quilt, as on a home machine. Sit-down machines take far less room: Handi Quilter's sit-down tables measure 38 by 38 inches, and it says the only other space you need is for your chair. A frame like its 8-foot Loft needs a room about 12 by 7 feet; try our longarm room size calculator if you are deciding between the two.
The trade-off is the quilt's weight. On a sit-down machine you support and move the whole quilt, which is why table size and extensions matter. Handi Quilter notes that keeping the quilt up and supported on the table reduces drag, and sells 18-inch table extensions for that reason.
What to look for
- Throat: 13 inches on the Little Rebel up to 20 inches on the Amara ST. More throat means more of a big quilt fits to the right of the needle.
- Stitch regulation: keeps stitches even as your hand speed changes. All the longarms here have it; the Juki mid-arm does not.
- Table: size, extensions and height. Handi Quilter's Lift table raises and lowers at a button; Grace includes leaves with the 19SD table.
- Bobbin: the Handi Quilter and Grace machines use M-class bobbins; Handi Quilter says its bobbin holds twice as much thread as a traditional home machine's.

Frequently asked questions
What is a sit-down longarm?
A longarm quilting machine set into a table. The machine stays still and you move the quilt under the needle, as on a home machine, but with a much larger throat and usually stitch regulation.
How much space does a sit-down longarm need?
Much less than a frame. Handi Quilter's sit-down tables are 38 by 38 inches, and it says the only other room you need is for your chair. Each optional extension adds 18 inches of width.
Can you quilt a king quilt on a sit-down longarm?
Yes, but you support and move the whole quilt. Handi Quilter describes the Amara ST as suited to everything from baby quilts to king size, and sells table extensions to keep large quilts supported and reduce drag.
Is a sit-down longarm worth it over a home sewing machine?
For regular quilting, the bigger throat and stitch regulation are the gains. Handi Quilter says the Moxie ST's 38 by 38 inch surface is three times the average home machine's, and its M-class bobbin holds twice as much thread.
