The Sawgrass SG500 is the sublimation printer we would buy for a small business. It is built for sublimation from the start, prints Letter and Legal sheets plus banners up to 51 inches long through its bypass tray, runs on Windows and Mac, and Sawgrass now covers printers bought from October 1, 2025 for 3 years or 100,000 prints. Sawgrass sells it on Amazon through its own store.
If you want the lowest-cost purpose-built option, the Epson SureColor F170 has an MSRP of $399 and refillable 140 mL ink bottles. For larger prints, the Sawgrass SG1000 takes 11 x 17 paper. If you want to decorate cotton as well as polyester, Sawgrass's VersiFlex system is the one sublimation-style option built for it.
Picks are based on Sawgrass, Epson and Brother's own pages, and Amazon US stock from the makers' stores or authorized sellers.

Best overall
Sawgrass SG500 (starter bundle with ink and paper)
A purpose-built sublimation printer with Windows and Mac drivers, banner-length printing and the longest warranty here.
- Max print
- 8.5 x 14 in; 8.5 x 51 in bypass
- Ink
- SubliJet UHD cartridges
- Connect
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB
- Warranty
- 3 yr or 100,000 prints
Pros
- Main tray takes up to Legal (8.5 x 14 in), and the rear bypass tray prints up to 8.5 x 51 inches
- Printer drivers for Windows and Mac, plus free print management software, per Sawgrass
- 3 years or 100,000 prints for printers bought on or after October 1, 2025 (original purchaser)
Cons
- Cartridge ink costs more per mL than Epson's bottles
- 8.5 inch maximum width
- Earlier purchases carry a 2-year warranty, so check the date on a used or older unit
Sawgrass makes printers only for sublimation, and the SG500 is its desktop model. Sawgrass's page lists Legal-size printing in the main tray (A4 on the EU model), up to 8.5 x 51 inches through the rear bypass tray, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB, printer drivers for both Windows and Mac, and free print management software. Two ink systems run in it: SubliJet UHD for polyester and coated items, and VersiFlex for cotton and other natural materials (see the pick below).
The warranty is the standout. For printers bought on or after October 1, 2025, Sawgrass covers 3 years or 100,000 prints from the date of purchase, for the original purchaser; earlier purchases have 2 years. This starter bundle includes SubliJet UHD ink and TruPix paper.
Best value
Epson SureColor F170
Epson's lowest-cost purpose-built sublimation printer, with refillable 140 mL bottles instead of cartridges.
- Max print
- 8.5 x 47.2 in sheets
- Ink
- Epson T49M, 140 mL bottles
- Connect
- Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet, USB
- Warranty
- 1-year unit exchange
Pros
- MSRP $399, per Epson
- Refillable 140 mL ink bottles in CMYK
- Sheets up to 8.5 x 47.2 inches and 1200 x 600 dpi, per Epson
Cons
- Epson says it is designed for Epson ink only, not third-party ink
- No roll media; sheets up to 8.5 inches wide only
- A 1-year unit exchange warranty, shorter than Sawgrass or Brother
The F170 is Epson's entry-level dye-sublimation printer, built for sublimation rather than converted. Epson lists a maximum paper width of 8.5 inches with sheets up to 47.2 inches long, a 150-sheet input tray, 1200 x 600 dpi, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet and USB, and Epson T49M ink in 140 mL bottles of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The MSRP is $399, and the warranty is a 1-year unit exchange with phone support.
Epson is clear that the printer is designed for Epson ink bottles only, not third-party ink. On Amazon it is sold by authorized dealers such as Johnson Plastics Plus rather than by Epson itself. See our Sawgrass vs Epson comparison for how it stacks up against the SG500.
Best for app-based design
Brother SP1 Sublimation Printer (with ink set and 100 sheets)
Brother's wireless sublimation printer with the Artspira design app and a 2-year warranty, sold by Amazon itself with 100 sheets of paper.
- Max print
- Up to 8.5 x 14 in
- Ink
- 4 x 47 mL cartridges
- Connect
- Wireless (no USB cable)
- Warranty
- 2 years
Pros
- Works with Brother's Artspira design app, which includes over 100 sublimation designs, per Brother
- Full-size 47 mL CMYK cartridges in the box
- 2-year limited warranty with replacement service
Cons
- Wireless only: Brother lists no USB cable
- Newer to sublimation than Sawgrass and Epson
- Brother lists the printer alone at $429.99; this bundle adds paper
Brother's SP1 is built around its Artspira app: you design or edit on a phone or tablet and send the print over Wi-Fi. Brother lists four 47 mL CMYK cartridges, 10 sheets of paper and a 2-year limited warranty with replacement service in the box, and its manual supports Letter, A4 and Legal paper, with custom sizes up to 8.5 x 14 inches. This Amazon listing, sold by Amazon itself, adds 100 sheets of sublimation paper.
It suits makers who already design on a tablet and want a simple wireless setup. Brother's manual warns that sublimation ink is not for ordinary office paper; use sublimation paper, such as Brother's own, which it lists as tested with the SP1.
Best for larger prints
Sawgrass SG1000 (bundle with 31 mL inks and paper)
The SG500's bigger sibling, taking A3 and 11 x 17 inch paper for full shirt fronts and larger panels.
- Max print
- A3 / 11 x 17 in main tray
- Ink
- SubliJet UHD cartridges
- Connect
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB
- Warranty
- 3 yr or 100,000 prints
Pros
- Main tray handles A3 and Tabloid (11 x 17 in), per Sawgrass
- Same ink systems, connectivity and warranty as the SG500
- Sold by Sawgrass's own Amazon store with 31 mL inks and paper
Cons
- Several times the price of the SG500
- Larger footprint
- Only worth it if you regularly print beyond 8.5 inches wide
An 8.5 inch wide print covers a mug, a tumbler wrap and a small shirt design, but not a full adult shirt front or a large pillow panel. Sawgrass says the SG1000's main tray handles A3 and Tabloid paper, against the SG500's A4 and Legal. Everything else carries over: the SubliJet UHD and VersiFlex ink options, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB, and the same warranty terms. Buy it if large polyester prints are a product line, not an occasional order.
Best if you also print on cotton
Sawgrass VersiFlex SG500 (printer, ink and paper)
Sawgrass's VersiFlex system extends sublimation-style printing to cotton, uncoated wood and unglazed ceramics.
- Max print
- 8.5 x 14 in; 8.5 x 51 in bypass
- Ink
- VersiFlex
- Connect
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB
- Warranty
- 3 yr or 100,000 prints
Pros
- Sawgrass says VersiFlex adds cotton and other natural fabrics, uncoated wood and unglazed ceramics
- Still handles traditional sublimation on poly-coated items like mugs and tumblers
- Same SG500 hardware and warranty
Cons
- Non-poly-coated items need Sawgrass's VersiFlex Light paper, a separate step and consumable
- Choose one ink system per printer
- Stock of this bundle was limited when we checked
Classic sublimation only works on polyester and polymer-coated blanks. Sawgrass's VersiFlex is its answer for crafters who also want to decorate cotton shirts: Sawgrass says VersiFlex lets you include cotton and other natural fabrics, uncoated wood and unglazed ceramics, while still doing traditional sublimation on coated mugs and tumblers. For non-coated items it prints on VersiFlex Light paper and presses that onto the product.
Sawgrass's own advice is simple: choose VersiFlex if most of your work is fabric, especially cotton shirts, and SubliJet UHD if you focus on poly-coated products. If cotton is your main market, also compare DTF printers, which print full color on cotton and dark garments.
How we chose
We picked printers built for sublimation by their makers, compared on maximum print size, ink system and bottle or cartridge size, connectivity and software, and warranty, from Sawgrass, Epson and Brother's own pages. We left out converted EcoTank printers for the warranty reason below.
What to look for
Print size
All the desktop models here print 8.5 inches wide, which covers mug and tumbler wraps and most small designs. Sawgrass's SG500 and Epson's F170 take long sheets for banners and wraps. For a full adult shirt front or large panels, you need an A3 / 11 x 17 machine like the SG1000, or a wide-format printer like Epson's 24 inch SureColor F570, which is sold through Epson dealers.
The ink system
Sawgrass and Brother use cartridges; Epson uses refillable bottles. Sawgrass offers two ink systems: SubliJet UHD for polyester and coated items, and VersiFlex for cotton and natural materials. Whatever you choose, use the maker's ink: Epson says the F170 is designed for Epson ink only.
Software and platform
Sawgrass lists printer drivers for Windows and Mac and free print management software. Brother builds around its Artspira app and wireless printing. Check that your design software and computer work with the printer before you buy.
Warranty
Sawgrass covers printers bought from October 1, 2025 for 3 years or 100,000 prints. Brother gives 2 years, and Epson a 1-year unit exchange. For a business, a longer warranty on the printer is worth real money.
Why we do not recommend a converted EcoTank
Many tutorials show an Epson EcoTank office printer filled with third-party sublimation ink. It works, and it is cheap, but Epson's support FAQ is explicit about the risk: using third-party products does not void the original warranty, but if they cause a failure, the repair of that failure will not be covered. Epson also says it does not recommend third-party ink. For a printer you depend on for orders, a purpose-built sublimation printer with the maker's ink and warranty is the safer business decision.
Sublimation basics before you buy
Sublimation dye bonds into polyester fibers or a polymer coating, so it works on polyester fabric and on coated blanks like mugs and tumblers, and it shows best on white and light colors. Sawgrass notes that the higher the polyester content, the brighter and more durable the result. For cotton and dark garments, look at DTF instead; our DTF versus sublimation comparison explains the trade-offs. You will also need a heat press: a flat press for shirts, and a tumbler press or mug press for drinkware. For settings, use the heat press settings chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best sublimation printer for beginners?
The Sawgrass SG500 is the easiest purpose-built option for most beginners, with Windows and Mac drivers and a long warranty. The Epson SureColor F170 costs less, and the Brother SP1 suits people who design on a tablet with Brother's Artspira app.
Can I convert an Epson EcoTank to sublimation?
People do, but Epson's support FAQ says that if third-party products cause a failure, the repair will not be covered under warranty, and Epson does not recommend third-party ink. A purpose-built sublimation printer avoids that risk.
Can sublimation print on cotton?
Standard sublimation cannot; it bonds to polyester and polymer coatings. Sawgrass's VersiFlex system is built to extend printing to cotton and other natural fabrics, and DTF printing also works on cotton.
What size sublimation printer do I need?
An 8.5 inch wide printer covers mug and tumbler wraps and small designs. For a full adult shirt front or larger panels, choose an 11 x 17 inch model like the Sawgrass SG1000 or a wide-format printer.
What is the warranty on a Sawgrass printer?
Sawgrass says SG500 and SG1000 printers bought on or after October 1, 2025 are covered for 3 years or 100,000 prints from the date of purchase, for the original purchaser. Earlier purchases are covered for 2 years.
